Bringing your data to life

Accountability and performance management

Tembo has worked with states, school districts, and charter management organizations to conceptualize and implement accountability and performance management systems. As part of this process, Tembo conducts stakeholder engagement to understand organizational goals; creates, calculates, and validates robust performance metrics; develops scoring methodologies that assess and categorize whole-school performance; and creates aligned reporting tools that make this information accessible and actionable for parents, families, and administrators. We have created accountability systems both for K12 systems and educator preparation programs; you can learn more here.

Applied research and analytics

Tembo supports states and districts by analyzing their student- and teacher-level data to help inform policy questions. Tembo supports the entire analytical process, from data cleaning, to descriptive or econometric analysis, to visualization and reporting. Past examples of work include analyzing achievement gaps in D.C. Public Schools, understanding graduate pathways in Washington D.C., and evaluating student choice systems in Camden and New Orleans, among others.

Data visualization and analytical storytelling

Tembo was founded on the premise that good data needs good design. Tembo can help craft visual data stories and narratives from existing data or can visualize custom analyses for a wide variety of stakeholder groups. Past examples of this work include interactive reporting tools for assessment results, educator preparation report cards, and K12 performance report cards.

Strategic regional analysis and geospatial analysis

Tembo can assist districts and states in helping plot their assets, resources, and environmental conditions to help understand how student need aligns with resources geographically. Past examples of this work include assisting D.C. Public Schools in their school and strategic planning processes by calculating regions of student and environmental risk that might require intervention or investment.

Strategy consulting

Tembo is regularly called upon to help districts and states as they make strategic decisions. This support can take multiple forms, including developing formal strategic plans that have validated key performance indicators, ensuring accountability frameworks align with goal-setting and evaluation systems, conducting audits of existing systems, analyzing data to determine where large scale strategic shifts are needed, and developing stakeholder engagement plans.
