Test reports that are sent to parents, students, and educators need to communicate a lot of information about how a student performed on an assessment. However, these reports have traditionally been very dense and difficult to understand.
Tembo worked with Achieve to produce sample family and educator reports that have been nationally released as templates for states and school districts to use to communicate with families. These reports are intended go well beyond typical assessment score reports, and in four ways in particular:
First, the reports are focused on the critical questions that families, teachers, and school leaders ask about the results in order to improve student learning. Tembo conducted extensive user research sessions to gather feedback.
Second, the data visualizations that are used raise the bar for data presentation in the field. Our design team incorporated, and innovated around, key best practices during the design process.
Third, the reports are intended to have an impact at scale, informing efforts across states to transform how results are reported to families and educators.
Finally, the reports focus not only on results, but on providing context. They include helpful comparisons – for example, a student’s performance over time, or a student’s performance compared to other students in their school or district. They also identify areas of strength and challenge, and are designed to be used as a conversation starter between parents and teachers about supporting a student’s success.
