About the Team

Tembo has been a trusted provider of data tools and services in the K-12 education space for six years. We help state departments of education, school districts, and educational leadership better understand and communicate their data through print reports and interactive web tools. The users of our reports and tools range from families, to school leaders, to data analysts, to policymakers.

Our designers work within our Product & Strategy Team, which is charged with driving product ideation, development, and deployment. We are in the midst of an exciting transition from a services-focused to a product company, and this team is at the center of making that happen. Our Designers are thoughtful professionals that can transform complex ideas and information into intuitive materials that tell stories with data.

About the Role

Designers work alongside other designers, product managers, frontend and backend developers, and data analysts to create digital experiences and print materials that make complex data accessible to families, school leaders, and administrators. You are proficient in Adobe CS and can use tools like InVision to bring your work to life. You are a skilled presenter and know how to make complex ideas and user flows easy to understand. You are just as serious about wireframes and prototypes as you are about the visuals of the design. You should be able to demonstrate a track record of success designing applications and websites. Finally, you should have the ability to adapt to new projects, technologies, and methodologies. We value process but not rigidity – we are in a key transitional period, and are always experimenting and evolving.

What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and developers on solutioning, design and product review, and workflow planning
  • Bring innovative contributions to all stages of product development: strategic planning, developing user flows, research and testing, wireframing, prototyping, creating conceptual visuals and production designs, and marketing our ideas and products
  • Translate requirements into compelling, forward-thinking concepts that meet (and balance between) client and user needs
  • Design robust wireframes, prototypes, and visual comps
  • Develop compelling visual solutions for projects
  • Work within a product design pattern library, and maintain precisely documented work so other designers can jump in and out
  • Articulate design thinking to internal/external stakeholders, seek out feedback, and respond with solutions
  • Constantly identify opportunities to improve what we do

Your Background

In order to be a strong fit at Tembo, you should have the following:

  • Experience
    • Minimum 5 years of visual, UI/UX, and interaction design experience with a portfolio that demonstrates exceptional conceptual thinking, problem-solving, and visual design skills in responsive web applications and print reports
    • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, and/or prototyping applications
    • Experience designing data visualizations for a range of audiences on web and in print
    • Knowledge of CSS, JavaScript, and HTML are a plus
    • Familiarity with agile development methodologies is nice to have, as is experience with Jira or other agile planning software
  • Skills
    • The ability to internalize complex concepts quickly and create compelling solutions
    • Demonstrated ability to work on several concurrent projects and juggle the demands of competing priorities, tight timelines, and shifting requirements
    • The ability to very clearly articulate and rationalize your design thinking
    • Ability to work well with cross-functional product teams and listen actively, speak candidly, keep everyone in the loop early and often, and encourage others to seek you out for collaboration
  • The personal qualities that will set you up for success at Tembo:
    • You are a self-starter
    • You are incredibly hard working
    • You have a strong sense of collaboration and camaraderie, but you are not afraid to own work and make it happen
    • You have keen attention to granular detail (the data and text in our work have to be perfect)
    • You thrive in a constantly changing environment – you see it as an opportunity to learn and grow, and not as an inconvenience
    • You are self-aware about your key strengths and where you want to continue to develop
    • You have exceptional speaking, writing, and visual communication skills
    • You know when to make judgement calls, but you also know when to consult colleagues and managers
    • You have a good sense of humor
    • You read everything and will put two exclamation points at the end of the Subject line of your email when you apply for this position (!!)
