About the Team

Tembo has been a trusted provider of custom data tools and services in the K-12 education space for six years. We help state departments of education, school districts, and educational leadership better understand and communicate their data through print reports and interactive web tools. The users of our reports and tools range from families, to school leaders, to data analysts, to policymakers.

Our Design Team is a unit within our Strategy Team, which is charged with driving product ideation, development, and deployment. We are in the midst of an exciting transition from a services-focused to a product company, and this team is at the center of making that happen. Our Designers are thoughtful professionals that can transform complex ideas and information into intuitive materials that tell stories with data.

About the Role

The Junior Designer will assist other designers in creating digital experiences and print materials that make complex data accessible to families, school leaders, and administrators. You should have the ability to adapt to new projects, technologies, and methodologies. We value process but not rigidity – we are in a key transitional period, and are always experimenting and evolving.

What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with designers and product managers on solutioning, design and product review, and workflow planning
  • Bring innovative contributions to all stages of product development
  • Design & revise robust wireframes, prototypes, and visual comps
  • Work within a product design pattern library, and maintain precisely documented work so other designers can jump in and out
  • Constantly identify opportunities to improve what we do

Your Background

In order to be a strong fit at Tembo, you should have the following:

  • A portfolio demonstrating conceptual thinking, problem-solving, and visual design skills in responsive web applications and print reports
  • Extensive experience in Adobe Creative Suite and Sketch
  • Experience with data visualizations for a range of audiences on web and in print
  • Demonstrated ability to work on several concurrent projects and juggle the demands of competing priorities, tight timelines, and shifting requirements
  • The ability to very clearly articulate and rationalize your design thinking
  • The ability to work well with cross-functional product teams and listen actively, speak candidly, keep everyone in the loop early and often
  • Experience with InVision, Principle, or Framer a plus
  • Basic knowledge of CSS, JavaScript, and HTML are a plus

And finally, the personal qualities that will set you up for success at Tembo:

  • You are a self-starter
  • You are incredibly hard working
  • You have a strong sense of collaboration and camaraderie, but you are not afraid to own work and make it happen
  • You have keen attention to granular detail (the data and text in our work have to be perfect)
  • You thrive in a constantly changing environment – you see it as an opportunity to learn and grow, and not as an inconvenience
  • You are self-aware about your key strengths and where you want to continue to develop
  • You have exceptional speaking, writing, and visual communication skills
  • You know when to make judgement calls, but you also know when to consult colleagues and managers
  • You have a good sense of humor
